You can see others who are getting ahead and you donât see yourself doing some of the things they are doing. In fact, you really kind of detest what you see others doing to get ahead and your principles simply wonât let you follow their example. Does this sound like you? This leaves you pondering what you can do as you donât see any role models. Iâm not advocating that you consider a personality transplant. It wouldnât work anyway. What I am proposing is adapting your behavior not all the time but in very specific situations. Adapting is simply a conscious effort by you to deliberately modify your behavior to meet both your goals and to satisfy the situation you are in. Think of adapting your behavior as the equivalent to the difference in how you behave with a child you know versus your boss. The person and the situations call for different behaviors â" in that moment. Here are some things you may be doing that call for a different approach: #1 You hunker down. The good news is your like to get down to business and will produce like crazy. The bad news is you do that at the expense of building relationships. Do this instead: Take a walk-around break. Pick a time each day to deliberately stop what youâre doing and go interact with others. #2 You donât inject your opinion. The good news is you listen and pay attention to whatâs being said. The bad news is, if people donât hear something from you, theyâll just assume you donât care or really have nothing to add. Do this instead: Make a point to offer up your ideas or opinions in every meeting or discussion you are in. It may be hard at first, but the more you do it the easier it will become. #3 You donât self-promote. The good news is you arenât being obnoxious like some other folks you probably know. (And while they are being obnoxious donât fool yourself into thinking that is always effective). The bad news is that you arenât paying attention to those that are self-promoting in a quiet, subtle way. Do this instead: Figure out who the key decision makers are and whatâs important to them. Then, deliver like crazy to their priorities and keep them updated along the way. It helps to reinforce that you not only paid attention but you delivered. #4 You donât communicate with the boss. There is no good news if youâre waiting for the boss to speak to you or give you their direction. You have to be responsible for communication and not wait until they come speak to you. Do this instead. Set up time to routinely speak to your boss. Update them on your work. Seek input on whatâs ahead. Ask how they view your performance and expectations of you. Take responsibility for the relationship. #5 Donât take everything at first glance. The good news is you listen. The bad news is that with some people you fail to realize they are thinking out loud. What you hear may be simply part of the process and not a conclusion. Do this instead: Learn to realize that for some people, you may have to ask, âwhere they landedâ on certain topics. What you heard might not be where or what they have concluded. Learn to ask questions. There are certainly many other situations where your behavior could stand some modifications in order to further your agenda. You do want to be wanted and a party invitation is certainly a sign that someone finds you desirable to be around. On the other hand, you regret agreeing to go shortly after you responded. It tends to only get worse as the day draws near. What sounded like a good idea a few weeks ago sounds like a bad idea now. Itâs how we roll. Despite the various arguments your mind wages on going or not going, let me share with you a few of things Iâve learned to take the dread out of it for you. - Focus on a strategy â" Yes, it sounds strange to think of a party like a strategy but there is some introvert goodness in doing this. Part of the dread of going to a party is the energy consumption of meeting new people and talking (or listening). Itâs too easy to allow yourself to sit and listen endlessly for hours. Some of that are ok but too much is a soul sucking. I have found a good strategy is to focus on 1 or may be 2 people at a time and to stay focused on them for a while. Introverts prefer relationships one-on-one, so go with what you do best. Another part of my strategy is to try to meet a couple of new people and get to know them more than the usual superficial party level. The good thing about focusing on a strategy is that it replaces the voice in your head telling you to stay home. - Find one thing to look forward to â" If you give it some thought, you can find a few high points to going to the party. You might think of more. Perhaps its getting to see someone you donât see too often and this will allow you some catch-up time. If that isnât it, it could be the opportunity to wear something special or the location. We once went to the party that was held before a musical. I knew we wouldnât know anyone that would be there, but I was looking forward to the stage event. When you have something positive to think about, use that to replace your negative party-talk. - Set boundaries â" If you have to, you could decide to go but only for a specific amount of time. That way, you arenât a flaky âno-showâ to the host and you can go with the knowledge that you have a cutoff point. Another tactic is to set boundaries on people who talk too much. We are great listeners but when youâre around someone who talks too much and cares too little about your life because they are only talking about them, it stops being fun. Know your limits and disengage. - Volunteer â" Call your host and see if you can help them with setting up the party or running to get supplies. Youâll be appreciated and also feel a greater investment in the event. - Define your attitude â" You can choose to think about going to a party however you want. Look at the party as an opportunity to meet a new friend or tighten relationships with people you already know. Make a choice to not be a party pooper â" before the party. There must be some good reason someone thought enough of you to invite you to their event. Capture that good spirit and use it. I think itâs important to participate in the things people invite you to. I know not all of my fellow âinniesâ shares that perspective. But, in my mind it goes something like this: If you turn someone down enough or are a no-show, they will stop asking. It becomes a signal that you donât want to nurture the relationship. For me, if they are in my life to begin with, I do care and I want this person to know. Test-Taking Tip Blocking Out Other Test-Takers When you take an exam, all that should matter is that piece of paper in front of you. But what do you end up thinking about in addition to those questions you are reading? The other people in the class; how fast theyre writing, the way theyre sitting, the moment each one stands up all finished and ready to turn in their finished product. Its human nature to be distracted by these things, but the nervous test-taking environment only accentuates it. A major piece of advice that will help you work through your test with minimal stress is that you must learn to block out those fellow students. You have the rest of the day and the rest of the week, outside and inside school to pay attention to those people now is not the time to be thinking about them. Every student is different when it comes to their test-taking abilities, so you cannot let their habits affect your own process. Some students can easily put their nerves on the back-burner and just race through a test without thinking twice. Some agonize over every single question and purposely use up every possible minute before the bell rings. Others anxiously tap their pencils against their desk, shake their feet, breathe loudly, or practice a multitude of other disrupting habits that could throw you off. You must put them out of your mind. You may also want to check out these tips on how to mentally prepare for test day. Easier said than done? Well, in this case, its mostly about the preparation. And finally, the students who are just anxiously looking around and zoning out, not really being able to focus on the test due to nerves, are more likely to be having the same worries you are and be more afraid of you judging them than having the time to judge you themselves. Here are some important habits of effective test takersthat you may find useful as well. Only you and your teacher deserve control over your grade By soaking up your thoughts in the actions of the surrounding test-takers, youre basically giving them power over your test score. Why should it matter if the guy next to you only needs ten minutes to finish the exam while you need the entire hour? If taking the entire hour means youll get an A, thats all that matters and even though that guy seems confident in his speedy test-taking skills, he may not end up doing so well. How would you feel later if the reason you got a poor grade was because you rushed through the test just to catch up to someone who ended up doing badly anyway? Dont let his fast process change your careful one; he is not determining your final grade, you and your teacher are. You have just as much power as they do Remember, you are all in the same boat. Other test-takers may be just as easily intimidated by you as you are by them. You might get freaked out by that insanely quick person who turns in the exam right away, but maybe youll appear insanely quick to someone else who can barely finish the test in the allotted time. There is no sense in tormenting yourself over how well everyone else is doing when you are part of everyone else to another nervous student. Its a vicious cycle that everyone just needs to let go of. No one test-taker has more influence over the class than anybody else. Stop assigning the power and just focus on you and your test. Ready to let go of this unnecessary worry and take your test? Your friends and colleagues will be impressed with your excellent writing skills in no time!The first point that is mentioned is alliteration that means when you begin words with the same letters or sounds. My friend Larry has a lizard who likes leaping leopards and alliteration also. Can you see the alliteration in that sentence? Alliteration draws attention to a specific line in your writing, signifying the importance of the repeated letters or words. It is often used in the media (newspaper headlines) and in advertisements to capture peoples imagination, and also in poemsLets look at some examples;Aliceâs aunt ate apples and acorns around August.Carries cat clawed her couch, creating chaos.As you can see, the examples use the letter for the majority of the words in the sentence. However, the best way to spot alliteration is to say the sentence aloud and listen for the words with the identical consonant sound- for example, the first sentence is easy- almost all the words have a short a sound.Lets try a few examples of our own- can you finish these sentences with your own words to make an alliteration? As mentioned before, alliteration is often used in advertisements-particularly in brand names such as Dunkin Donuts an d Coca-cola. Can you think of any other brands that use alliteration? What about famous people? Another way we can use alliteration is in phrases such as neck and neck (meaning to be level in a race), write a phrase in the comment section to show your alliteration expertise!Now lets go back to our video of Martin Luther King. As you can see, the next technique he used when writing that incredible speech was something called anaphora. That means that a word in the text/speech refers back to other ideas in the text/speech for its meaning. An easier way to achieve cohesion (that means, to stick your writing together), is to use pronouns to refer back to the noun that has already been introduced. Lets begin with an easy example; âI went to the restaurant with Jo on Sunday. She looked awful. Who does the she refer to in this sentence? Thats right, it is talking about Jo. Lets look at this example:John was late for class again. The teacher put John in detention. John was late for class again, so the teacher put him in detention.Can you see how I connected the sentences together with the word so, and referred back to John with the pronoun him-as we are still talking about a John (if you have forgotten which connectors to use, look at these great posts here and here. This makes our sentence much more fluent and easier to read. That was an easy example, now lets try some more complex sentences where we replace nouns with pronouns.For this exercise, you are going to join the two sentences together to form one sentence, using a pronoun to replace the noun.
